讲述1934年秋，红军北上抗日，开始撤离中央苏区。红五团出发之前，团长王大东写信告诉妻子——直属队指导员李冬梅，要她立刻与瑞金县委取得联系。由于怀孕而留在地方工作的冬梅．带着通讯员小妹子去县委途中，遇到六名也要去找县委的伤员，其中一些人不愿留在地方，主张追赶作战部队，与带队的陈排长争执起来。冬梅问明原委之后，向他们解释了在地方工作的意义，说服他们一同去找县委。到达目的地，才发现县委已经搬走。这时，国民党的炮火猛烈扑来，眼前的一切都被浓烟吞没。战士们在刚夺下的红旗面前，立下誓死不渝的革命意愿。县委交通告诉他们，县委已迁到火星栋。冬梅因临产，留在老四嫂家。陈排长带领伤员们到火星栋时，县委又转移了。于是，陈排长等人辗转在敌后活动，与冬梅失去了联系。冬梅同一些伤员组成游击队第三大队，夺取武阳镇，惩处了叛徒马家辉，不断打击敌人。游击队深入敌人心脏活动，把国民党保安团打得坐立不安。冬梅因长期与党失去联系，开展敌后工作很困难。一天，她偶然得到红军第一方面军与陕北刘志丹部会师的消息，立即召开党小组会，并派大光到福建寻找党。大光动身那天，国民党保安团孙主任派特务冒充我通讯员诱骗冬梅下山，使游击队遭到伏击。四中队得知三大队的情况后，立即作好营救三大队的部署，在水陆打击敌人，使三大队的同志安全脱离。这时，共产党驻赣州办事处主任王大东命小赵与冬梅联系，恰巧国民党也派人上山来会冬梅。他们看到小赵带来的中央有关国共谈判的重要指示，才了解国内的新形势。冬梅按照党的指示，以当地游击队代表的身份，与国民党进行谈判。 国共代表第一天在谈判席上的交锋，敌人不得不佩服李冬梅的出众才能。敌人并不甘心失败，他们要求冬梅留下，准备次日再进行谈判。当晚，国民党却偷袭了冬梅所率的游击队。陈排长从容应战，将来犯之敌一网打尽。第二天，冬梅在谈判席上谴责国民党破坏和平的行为，拒绝在谈判书上签字，被孙主任无理扣留。直至新四军代表王大东到达瑞金，冬梅在群众的声援下，才被释放。于是，他们夫妻得以相会。

影片将干将莫邪之间坚贞不渝的爱情、眉间赤与山中客之间的侠义之情进行融合，同时还将铸剑及恢弘的武侠世界进行呈现。
